Hotel Victoria: Stavanger's oldest hotel, by the harbour
Free bikes in the lobby, a view of the harbour from the room, and a restaurant with real buzz. More than a century of history, and it still feels fresh.
The verdict
A lovely atmosphere, a restaurant with great food and service, and a perfect location. Hotel Victoria has history in its walls, yet feels new and fresh.
Push open the front door, and the first thing you see is a row of black bicycles lined up on a striped floor. They are free for every guest to borrow. It is such a simple idea, and such a lovely start to a stay.
Hotel Victoria has looked out over the harbour in Stavanger since 1900, and is the oldest hotel in the city. We have stayed here twice, for a night in December 2025 and again in June 2026, both times while working in Stavanger.

The rooms
Our room was lovely, freshly renovated in soft greys and whites, with heavy curtains and a beautiful view of the harbour. Boats come and go right below the window.
Our room
On the bed, a chocolate with the hotel’s name on it.
The room, from the sitting area to the bed.
The view
Stavanger’s white wooden houses climb the hill on the other side of the water.

The restaurant
We have eaten in the restaurant before, and it was just as good this time. The service is excellent: warm, attentive and genuinely friendly. The room is stylishly renovated and full of happy people, and the food is very good.
The hotel is full of history. The salon, a good place for a coffee or a drink before dinner, has crystal chandeliers and deep sofas, and in the private dining room, old paintings of sailing ships hang on panelled walls.
There is even a small hotel shop by the lobby, with local treats and gifts to take home.
Around the hotel
The location is perfect, right in the heart of things. Just around the corner is Old Stavanger, with its narrow cobbled lanes and white wooden houses, flowers on the steps and blue front doors. It is lovely on foot, and even better on one of the hotel’s bikes.
Old Stavanger
Stavanger is also one of Norway’s best food cities, so there is plenty to explore when you get hungry.

What we loved
- Free bikes in the lobby for every guest
- A room with a view of the harbour
- Warm, attentive service in the restaurant
- History in the walls, but a fresh and modern feel
Worth knowing
- Ask for a room facing the harbour
- There is no spa or pool; this is a city hotel
Good to know
Hotel Victoria suits everyone, whether you are in Stavanger for work, for a weekend or for the food. Our best tip: borrow a free bike and explore the city.
A lovely atmosphere, a great restaurant and a perfect location, in a hotel that has been welcoming guests for more than a century.
